Marathon 3.0: Less Than Two Weeks to Go
If it seems like I'm writing too much about running on the blog, you should probably reread that headline. I've reached the point where if I'm not running, I'm doing some other type of exercise. If I'm not exercising, I'm working on strengthening my feet or hips. If I'm not doing that, I'm eating, sleeping or working. OK, I exaggerate, but that's what it feels like. Marathon 3.0: Injury and Recovery
It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who read my last update that things took a little turn for the worse. I was walking home from work one day when I felt pain in my left foot. After my last marathon, I tore a tendon in that foot, so my thoughts immediately went there. But this didn't feel quite the same. The pain subsided that night but returned when I was walking home the next day. I did a short run in my Vibrams that didn't result in any additional pain, and over the next couple of days it disappeared. But when I started my long run for the week in my pair of Brooks, it came back, and it got a lot worse. Marathon 3.0: Up, Down, Up, Down
When you're training for a race, there are always going to be good runs and bad runs. And usually it's easy to tell why a certain run worked while another didn't — like I didn't hydrate enough, didn't get enough sleep, didn't plan a proper route, etc. But lately I feel like I'm bouncing between the good and the bad, and I'm not always sure what sets them apart. Music Pick: The Big Roar
I've been listening to The Joy Formidable's debut album The Big Roar for a while now, and I think I finally understand why I can't quite pull myself away from it: It subtly rocks. There's no other way to describe it. The song "Whirring" is a perfect example: It begins softly, with the rhythm section and lead singer Ritzy Bryan's vocals bouncing along harmlessly. But by the end it's thrashing around, the drummer is doing double bass fills and you're thinking "This must be $#%& epic live." From what I've read about their concerts, it is. Marathon 3.0: The Long Haul
It's been an interesting couple of weeks, but I made it to week five in my training. There were some distracting moments (earthquakes, a hurricane, loss of electricity, clean up), but the great thing about week four was the chance to scale back on my miles and rest a little. Now that week four is over, I'm back to worrying about the same problems I was facing in week three: finding routes for my long runs. |
